Ambiguity in SAR Compact-Dual Polarimetric Continuum for Agricultural Target Characterization
Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data helps in charaterizing scattering targets in agricultural monitoring applications. Fully polarimetric systems, which capture the complete scattering matrix, enable detailed characterization of agricultural targets. However, ambiguity arises when using dual especially when scattering power decompostions of compact-pol SAR data is translated directly i dual-pol cases. It is mainly due to lack the complete co-polarization phase information necessary for distinguishing between canonical scattering mechanisms such as trihedral and dihedral targets. This study examines the limitations of dual-pol (VV-VH mode) data compared to compact-pol SAR in differentiating agricultural targets. The findings suggest that end-users should exercise caution when using dual-pol SAR data for target characterization based on scattering powers. The compact-pol RH-RV mode shows promise in distinguishing scattering mechanisms, while the VV-VH mode is less effective. These insights underscore the challenges of using reduced polarization modes for agricultural target characterization and suggest ways to enhance SAR data interpretation.
