Terrestrial and Aerial LiDAR Dataset of Individual Trees in the Shivalik Range, India

Forests are crucial for climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and resource provision. We present a comprehensive dataset capturing detailed three-dimensional (3D) point cloud data of 674 individual trees from 12 plots containing 15 different species within the Shivalik Range, northern Haryana, India. Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) technologies, this dataset includes point clouds, and additionally in-situ measurements of Diameter at Breast Height (DBH), species identification, and RGB photos. TLS and ALS provide high-resolution data essential for forest characterization and morphological parameter estimation. Rigorous georeferencing and co-registration processes ensure high positional accuracy, validated by Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) values ranging from 12 mm to 23 mm. This dataset supports various applications including biomass estimation, tree segmentation, species classification and the development of machine learning algorithms or deep learning models. By offering open access to this high-quality data, we aim to promote collaboration and innovation in research in forest ecology, management, and conservation.
