Substrate Selection for Tuning Range Optimization of Frequency-Reconfigurable Antennas
The effect of substrate properties on the tuning range of frequency-reconfigurable antennas is investigated in this paper. To this end, the behavior of a representative antenna geometry is analyzed for substrates with various relative permittivities and thicknesses. Based on the simulation results, a well-defined relationship between the tuning range and the substrate material characteristics is observed. It can be concluded that, for a given antenna structure, defined by the antenna topology and the number of lumped components, an optimized antenna realized on a thicker and lower-permittivity substrate will provide a larger tuning range, with a tuning range variation being well above a factor of two for the considered substrate variations.
