Gain Enhancement of Wideband Miniaturized Monocone Antenna by Employing Cavity and Dielectric Lens

In this paper, a new gain enhancement technique using a unique combination of metal-backed conical cavity and a shaped dielectric lens for a wideband miniaturized monocone antenna source is presented. The entire structure is designed using 3D printable materials. The conical metal cavity can be built using aluminum alloy (AlSi10Mg, σ = 600000 siemens/meter) and dielectric lens can be built using a Radix material with a relative permittivity of 2.8 with loss tangent of 0.0046. Inclusion of metal cavity plus dielectric lens provides gain enhancement of up to 5 dB at lower frequencies (3 GHz) to 12 dB at higher frequencies (20 GHz) while maintaining wideband miniaturized antenna radiation patterns. This antenna can find applications in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other wireless communications.
