Scattering Power Index to Monitor Urban and Non-Urban Area Using G5U Decomposition Model

Built-up area monitoring is important for studying the new constructions and destructions (man-made or natural). The scattering power ratio index is developed using the General 5-component scattering power decomposition model (G5U) for built-up and non-built-up areas discrimination. In the technique of separating built-up from non-built-up areas, the scattering power ratio index for vegetation is subtracted from the proposed scattering power ratio index for built-up areas. The developed approach is tested with fully polarimetric Advanced Land Observation Satellite-2/Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 data. The result shows that the proposed approach and index can be used to distinguish urban and non-urban areas.
