Backscatter Coefficients and Circular Polarization Ratio based Study of Impact Craters in the Permanently Shadowed Region of the Lunar South Pole using Chandrayaan-2 DFSAR data

Impact craters on Lunar surface are significant terrain features. These craters are important as they are considered potential sites for the presence of water ice. This study aims to analyze radar backscatter strength and circular polarization ratio (CPR) of impact craters using Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR) data from Chandrayaan-2 mission. A total of 30 random craters, varying in size from small to medium, were selected near the Faustini crater for detailed analysis. Backscatter coefficients and CPR values for the interior and exterior of the craters were extracted using L-band Seleno Reference Images (SRI) and Single Look Complex (SLC) images from the DFSAR sensor. The result strongly suggests high CPR value at the base of the craters and is showing a positive correlation with backscatter coefficient. The increased CPR and backscatter at the base of craters is more likely due to exposed rocks or coherent backscatter opposition effect (CBOE).
