Bidirectional Current Controlled Battery Charger Using DCM Asymmetrical SRC and Boost-Buck Converters

This paper presents a converter system with bidirectional operation. The objective of this converter system is to transfer energy between a battery and a DC bus, each of which has a nearly constant voltage. This research work uses a series resonant converter (SRC) operated in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) connected in cascade configuration with a two-switch boost-buck converter. With SRC operated in DCM providing constant current and boost-buck converter providing a wide range of gain, the proposed system has the flexibility to match several values of battery and DC bus with constant current supply and common ground between both ends. The proposed system can do forward operation, from batter to DC bus, as well as, backward operation, from DC bus to battery (battery charging). In this paper, the analysis and design examples of the proposed system are given. The computer simulation to confirm the analytical work is also included.
