Mineral Characterization of Crater Pitatus - Floor Fractured Nectarian Aged Crater.
Lunar surface is evidence to highly energetic and interactive processes that have shaped the Moon over billions of years [1]. Impact craters, such as Pitatus, are a crucial component of this geological history, providing valuable insights into the Moon’s early formation, evolution and mineralisation. As a Nectarian-aged Floor Fractured Crater (FFC), Pitatus Crater is a rare and un-common crater having feature that has been the subject of extensive research for understanding geologic evolution of the moon. This study aims to further our understanding of Pitatus Crater by examining its minerology. The data used is from Chandrayaan-2 payload IIRS (Imaging Infra-Red Spectrometer) been used to analyze the mineral composition of crater Pitatus. The study focuses on the detection and characterization of common lunar minerals such as Mg Spinel, plagioclase feldspar, olivine and pyroxene. The IIRS data is processed and removed emitted radiation to utilize the true reflectance data to determine the specific mineralization of the lunar surface [2], [3]using the differential absorption characterization minerals.
