Mid-Range Magnetic Communication System Using Magnetic Induction Sensor-Based Receiver for Conventional and Non-Conventional Media Applications

This paper presents new potentials and promising solutions for mid-range magnetic communication by overcoming the short communication distance limitations using a magnetic communication system with a differential magnetic induction (DMI) sensor-based receiver. In addition, test and evaluation of magnetic communication link were conducted in practical channel environments for various media such as air/water cross-boundary and conventional/non-conventional media. For test evaluation, wireless digital communication with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) at a frequency of 20 kHz is used. As a result, it was confirmed that the magnetic field can continuously penetrate across the boundaries of heterogeneous media such as air and water without signal loss, enabling magnetic communication in heterogeneous media environments, the air and underwater environment such as freshwater. The successful magnetic communication link was established up to 40 m.
