Exploring Crop Growth Dynamics: Dual-Polarimetric SAR for Biophysical Parameter Assessment in Green Gram
This study explores the capability of multitemporal Sentinel1A dual polarization datasets for monitoring the growth of green gram crop with comprehensive ground truth measurement of crop height and vegetation water content (VWC). The temporal changes in the backscattering coefficient corresponding to VH and VV polarizations, as well as various essential vegetation indices such as Radar Vegetation Index (RVI), Dual pol Radar Vegetation Index (DpRVI) and Dual pol SAR Vegetation Index (DpSVI), were observed over the days after sowing of green gram. Moreover, regression analysis was conducted to assess the correlation between measured biophysical parameters and SAR parameters for overall crop growth dynamics. The analysis revealed that both crop height and VWC exhibited significant sensitivity to SAR backscattering parameters. Additionally, among the vegetation indices, DpSVI demonstrated greater sensitivity to crop height and VWC compared to other indices such as RVI and DpRVI.
