Memory Match Quest: An Interactive Game to Sharpen Cognitive Recall and Recognition Skills
This paper presents the development of a Java-based memory matching game aimed at improving cognitive function in individuals with mental illnesses. The game employs memory- enhancing techniques such as retrieval practice and distributed practice, offering multiple levels of difficulty to accommodate players with varying cognitive abilities. The primary goal of this research is to enhance memory skills, increase IQ, and slow down memory deterioration through engaging gameplay. Additionally, an IQ assessment feature is incorporated, allowing players to track their cognitive progress over time. While video games are widely recognized for their ability to boost social and cognitive skills, there is limited research on their potential to support cognitive health specifically in individuals with mental disabilities. This paper seeks to bridge that gap by offering a customizable and enjoyable gaming experience that contributes to cognitive therapy. Initial testing indicates that players demonstrate improved response times and memory retention after repeated interactions with the game. User feedback underscores the game’s potential as a therapeutic tool, suggesting avenues for future enhancement.
