Directivity and Gain Enhancement of a Coaxial-Fed Rectangular Patch Antenna using Multi-Layer Metamaterial Superstrate

This article emphasizes enhancing the directivity and gain of a coaxially-fed rectangular patch antenna using a multilayered metamaterial substrate. Few existing approaches suggest the usage of single-layer metamaterial substrates or superstrates, but the application of multilayered metamaterial superstrates is quite rare. This article suggests a novel method for performance enhancement using a multilayered substrate. For analysis purposes, a rectangular patch antenna (fed with a coaxial probe) that operates at a frequency of 5.569 GHz is designed and simulated. It is then integrated with a 10-layer metamaterial substrate (each layer being a 6-by-6 array of rectangular split ring resonators, SRR). The multilayered superstrate, when integrated with the proposed patch antenna, can enhance the performance of the proposed antenna significantly. The integrated antennalens assembly exhibits a maximum improvement of about 4.65 dB in directivity and an improvement of about 4.465 dB in gain relative to the proposed patch antenna. Simulation and discussion results of the proposed antenna and lens assembly are presented in this article.
