Multi-Year Glacier Facies Dynamics in the Gangotri Glacier Using Sentinel-1 SAR Data
This study leverages Sentinel-1 SAR data to map glacier facies in the Gangotri glacier region. By analyzing variations in backscatter across different seasons and elevations, we aim to provide a more precise delineation of these zones and their temporal changes. SAR-based glacier zones offer a valuable framework for understanding glacier dynamics and their response to climate change. By analyzing the spatial and temporal distribution of these zones, researchers can gain insights into glacier evolution and potential impacts on water resources and ecosystems. The study utilizes Sentinel-1 SAR data collected across three seasons (early summer, late summer, and winter) from 2020 to 2022. The variations in glacier zones are analyzed in relation to altitude and the backscattering characteristics of VV polarizations. Additionally, the changes in glacier zones are compared with seasonal snow cover maps produced using Sentinel-2 data.
