Microstrip fed Hexagonal Shaped Cross-Slotted Antenna for N257 Band Applications

This paper proposes a microstrip fed hexagonal shaped antenna with cross-slot in patch and Defected Ground Structure(DGS) for N257 (26-29 GHz) band 5G applications using Ansys HFSS Software. The proposed antenna is designed over a 1.6 mm thick FR-4 Epoxy substrate. The dimension of the proposed antenna is 48×36mm2. The antenna exhibits the operating bandwidth from 26 GHz to 29 GHz, with high impedance matching for 5G mmWave (Millimeter Wave), exceptionally at 28 GHz which is enabled by a combination of a hexagonal shaped cross-slotted radiator and partial ground plane, whereas the impedance matching of the proposed antenna is at 50 Ω. The proposed antenna operates with a Peak Gain of approximately 5.5 dB and the radiation efficiency of about 58%. The antenna also maintains a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of less than or equal to 2 across the operating bandwidth, ensuring excellent impedance matching. Moreover, active reflection coefficient of this proposed antenna is observed to be -26.1 dB. The operating bandwidth for N257 band enables the antenna to work over a wide range of real-world applications, which includes 5G communications (mmWave technology), Internet of Things (IoT), satellite communication, and various other emerging wireless technologies.
