FOOD LABELING VOCABULARY IN UKRAINIAN(some types of vegetables)

Food products are plant and animal objects of various origins, from which food is prepared, necessary for the existence of the human body, its vital energy, and health. Vegetables and fruits occupy a prominent place among them. The names of food products are part of the culinary lexical system, which also includes methods of cooking food, names of dishes, the art of table setting, etc. It is simply impossible to describe all this in one article, so we will focus only on some names of vegetables, especially those that are most often consumed, without which Ukrainian cuisine cannot do. They all have their own history of origin, names, characteristic external features and their own consumer qualities. Letʼs try to describe them both as plant crops and as lexemes for their designation. This applies to vegetables such as peppers, cabbage, onions, which have a variety of species, varieties, shapes, colors. They are consumed in different countries, on different continents. And they originated far from Ukraine. Exchanging information about their «existence» in different countries, in different cultures, will be interesting in classes with foreign students who are learning the Ukrainian language in higher educational institutions. In such classes, you can learn not only how a particular vegetable is consumed in their country, but also exchange experiences in preparing certain dishes from these vegetables, and also organize a discussion: are such food products vegetables or fruits (after all, in specialized books on vegetable growing, readers are often convinced that a particular product belongs to the opposite classification group). And since we consider not only vegetables, but also the vocabulary for their designation, we observe the corresponding paradigmatic and syntagmatic series of lexemes, which include both variant, synonymous, antonymic relations, and toponymic (oikonymic) names. Key words: Ukrainian as a foreign language, linguistic and regional studies, nomenclatural names of vegetables, their origin, color variety of products, lexeme paradigmatics and syntagmatics.
