TRANSLATION SCIENCE TERMINOLOGY: DEFINING THE TRANSLATION SCIENCE PROCESS TERMS-AGENTS (on the material of Ukrainian and English languages)

The article presents an analysis of translation studies terminology, specifically focusing on the micro-term system of the “the translation studies process agent”. A description is proposed for concepts that define agents of the translation studies process as one of the ideographic term groups within translation studies. Based on the analysis of dictionaries and encyclopedias of linguistic terms, the composition of the examined term group has been established and supplemented with terms identified from specialized literature on translation theory. A total of 10 Ukrainian terms have been collected, with corresponding English equivalents provided. The structural features of the analyzed terms are characterized, including primarily single-word, compound (two-word and multi-word), and appositional terms. Additionally, the specifics of systemic relations within the analyzed micro-system are outlined, particularly hyper-hyponymic relations with the base word “перекладач” (Eng. Translator), and synonymic relations (“перекладач”, “драгоман” / Eng. Translator, Dragoman). All terms belong to commonly used vocabulary, except for the archaic lexeme (“драгоман”). Within the micro-system, a core (консультант-перекладач / Eng. Consultant-translator, перекладач-людина / Eng. Human-translator, сурдоперекладач / Eng. Sign-language interpreter, перекладач судовий (присяжний) / Eng. Court Interpreter, анонімний перекладач / Eng. Anonymous translator) and a peripheral zone are distinguished, representing the dichotomy “адресат – адресант” projected onto the translation studies process (“адресат під час перекладу” / Eng. Addressee during translation, “адресант під час перекладу” / Eng. Adressant during translation, “інтерпретований адресат в процесі перекладу” / Eng. Interpreted addressee during the process of translation, “адресат-функція” / Eng. Addressee-function). Definitions of the analyzed concepts are provided in both Ukrainian and English. The scientific significance of the study lies in the potential of the presented material to serve as a foundation for a Ukrainian-English explanatory and translation dictionary of translation studies terms, addressing an existing gap in Ukrainian terminography. Key words: translation research process agent, English language, translation studies, terminology, terminography, Ukrainian language.
