Varifocal near-eye display with extended eyebox using dual slit-mirror array
We present a varifocal near-eye display that overcomes eyebox limitations using a dual slit-mirror array configuration. This approach dynamically adjusts image depth to mitigate the vergence-accommodation conflict and forms a real image of the focus-tunable lens at the eye’s pupil plane, maintaining a constant eyebox size independent of the system’s field of view. Additionally, we introduce a vision correction method for users with refractive errors, enabling clear image observation without prescription lenses, along with an image pre-compensation technique to reduce optical aberrations. Experimental results confirm the feasibility of our design, demonstrating simultaneous expansion of the eyebox and field of view, as well as improved image quality. • A varifocal near-eye display with expanded eyebox using a dual slit-mirror array is proposed. • The proposed system ensures a constant maximum eyebox, resolving field-of-view trade-offs. • Vision correction method enables clear image observation without the need for prescription lenses. • Pre-compensation algorithm mitigates optical distortions, improving overall image clarity. • Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a wide eyebox in VR/AR scenes.
