Clinical Management of Insomnia in Adults

Abstract
Although the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend a minimum of 7 hours of sleep per night, more than 25% of adults do not meet this recommendation. There are a variety of evidence-based interventions for insomnia, but many patients with insomnia go without treatment. This article aims to provide nurse practitioners with an overview of insomnia diagnostic criteria and treatment options to inform the clinical care of patients with insomnia. Nonpharmacologic options, including cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, and pharmacologic options, including antihistaminergic medications, dual orexin receptor antagonists, and nonbenzodiazepine sedative-hypnotics, are reviewed.
