Polarization-induced terahertz asymmetric transmission in liquid crystal integrated metasurface

Abstract The combination of liquid crystal (LC) and metasurface offers an excellent platform for the development of tunable and efficient terahertz (THz) functional devices. Herein, we experimentally present an LC-integrated metasurface for polarization-induced THz asymmetric transmission (AT). This structure comprises an LC layer situated between double graphite electrodes and then integrated with an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metasurface. By controlling LC orientation through static magnetic field anchoring and adjustable electric field, this device realizes the active modes switch from the EIT mode to the non-EIT mode, and these two operational states align perfectly with the orthogonal polarization excitation modes of the EIT metasurface. Furthermore, polarization-induced THz AT was achieved resulting from the distinct polarization responses at forward and backward incidences, and the AT isolation can be dynamically adjusted by a variable electric field. This investigation into dynamic polarization conversion and AT on LC-integrated metasurface paves the way for active THz devices with promising applications in THz communication and imaging systems.
