Enhancing english proficiency with intelligent assistants in Algerian universities

The present qualitative research design is an attempt to explore the transformative impact of AI-powered intelligent assistants in university students acquiring the English language. This research, in relying on the attainment of secondary data from academic journals, case studies, reports on platform usage, and institutional policy documents, will consider the challenges and opportunities given by the integration of the AI tool Grammarly, Duolingo, and ChatGPT into the higher education setting. The qualitative nature of this approach now provides an in-depth investigation into how AI technologies can support learning about the English language, framing the study against a culturally, technologically, and educationally unique context created by Algerian universities. This study, methodologically, is grounded in the critical analysis of literature published within the last five years to ensure its findings reflect recent advances and trends within the AI-enhanced education. These are encased in recurring themes: the place of AI in adaptive learning, cultural acceptance of technology in traditional systems of education, and infrastructural barriers, among others, facing universities in Algeria. These themes emerge to indicate the transformative potential that AI-driven tools have in improving language proficiency by offering personalized learning paths, real-time feedback, and engaging content tailored to individual learners' needs. Besides identifying these benefits, the study addresses some significant challenges: access to technology, resistance from educators, and cultural nuances that make the integration of AI tools difficult. These barriers would include investment in robust digital infrastructure, teacher training for AI literacy, and developing policies that ensure equity in access to technological resources. This study further argues for the creation of an enabling environment that would focus on integrating technology with pedagogy and policy to realize full potential for AI in English language education. Ultimately, this research points to a way of balance that merges the traditional approach with the AI-enhanced strategies. The universities in Algeria will be able to engage in an inclusive and dynamic way of learning through the use of intelligent assistants and thus prepare students with the language of English to fit into an increasingly connected world.
