Introducing a New‐Generation Nanocomposite Cement to Implement in Oil and Gas Wells: Comprehensive Experimental Study

ABSTRACT Achieving the optimal balance of cement weight, viscosity, strength, and fluid loss is critical for oil and gas well cementing applications, particularly under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. This study addresses these challenges by incorporating MgO‐PAM (polyacrylamide) nanocomposite as a novel additive to enhance the performance of Class G cement. The cement samples were formulated with a water‐to‐cement ratio (WCR) of 50% and 10% pozzolan, with modifications including 1 mass% polymer (PC) and 1 mass% nanocomposite (NC). The experimental results demonstrated substantial improvements in cement properties. Specifically, nanocomposite inclusion increased viscosity by 14%, reduced fluid loss drastically from 122 to 32 cc, and extended the thickening time from 9 to 14 h, whereas calorimetry confirmed enhanced hydration energy. Compressive strength increased significantly for NC samples (32% after 7 days and 35% after 28 days), whereas permeability values decreased to 0.1 mD compared to 0.5 mD for base cement. SEM analysis revealed a denser microstructure with fewer pores for NC samples, indicating enhanced durability and better well integrity. These findings underscore the superior performance of MgO‐PAM nanocomposite in optimizing hydration, mechanical strength, permeability, and long‐term durability of Class G cement, demonstrating its potential as a promising material for oil and gas well applications.
