An Evaluation of Ibn Khaldun’s Understanding of Civil Society
Abstract For societies in the modern age where democracy has developed, civil society has become indispensable. This feature is evident on a local level and also asserts its importance globally. In this context, civil society plays significant roles in revealing solidarity and social roles, while also having functions that can influence the governance methods of states. At this point, the societal mentality presented by Ibn Khaldun also puts forth important arguments for civil society. The social characteristics and thoughts expressed within the framework of asabiyyah (social cohesion) and the science of ‘umran (civilization) are significant contributions to the concept of civil society. Therefore, this study aims to deeply examine Ibn Khaldun’s understanding of civil society in the context of asabiyyah and the science of ‘umran , and to compare his views on society with modern civil society theories. At this point, in addition to evaluating the mission and importance assigned to civil society in Ibn Khaldun’s works, the impacts of his thoughts on contemporary understanding and practices of civil society will also be assessed. The study aims to provide a current evaluation by addressing the contemporary significance and importance of Ibn Khaldun’s thoughts on civil society.
