The Euler characteristic, q-matroids, and a Möbius function

Initially, we give two new proofs of the well-known relation between the reduced Euler characteristic of a matroid complex and the Möbius invariant of the dual matroid. We establish a [Formula: see text]-analog of this by relating the reduced Euler characteristic of the order complex of a [Formula: see text]-matroid complex with the Möbius invariant of the dual [Formula: see text]-matroid, and this relation differs from the classical case of matroids. We prove that the reduced Euler characteristic of the order complex is nonzero if and only if the [Formula: see text]-matroid is not a uniform [Formula: see text]-matroid, which again represents a profound difference from the matroid case. Consequently, we describe how the nonzeroness of the reduced Euler characteristic is not sufficient in identifying the supports of subcodes of a vector rank metric code.
