Sisal Fiber ( Agave sisalana ) Production in the Brazilian Semiarid from 1988 to 2024
With climate change and the increase of arid and semiarid regions, more studies are requested to promote species that have the potential to produce food, fiber, and energy in water-stressed regions. The objective of the study was to monitor the profile of sisal production in Brazilian semiarid focusing on planted area, productivity, commercialization, and the impact on region and population. Results showed that the planted areas of sisal can be represented by oscillation with an increase between 1995 and 2007 and a subsequent reduction of 75%. Bahia is the main state with sisal areas represented by 95% of Brazil. The main cities with sisal areas are located in the Northeast and North regions of Bahia. Based on the data, it conclude that the profile of sisal productivity can be described by the great cycle of stabilization in the last years. Sisal has a promising future not only because of the new uses of this fiber but also because of growing public awareness of natural fiber and bioethanol. Policymakers should establish incentives and regulations for the sisal fiber sector to advance production and sustainability.
