Community Identity of Lak Ha Market, Ratchaburi Province
This research aims to study the development and transformation of the Lak Ha Market community, analyzing the components that reflect the community's valuable and perceivable identity. It evaluates the significance and importance of physical, economic, and social elements by reviewing literature alongside studying the development and changes of the Lak Ha floating market community. Fieldwork, along with criteria for community value assessment and in-depth interviews, led to the conclusion of the identity of the Lak Ha floating market community. The findings reveal that the Lak Ha Market community possesses distinctive physical features, particularly in its enduring structural characteristics. As an old community with a long history, its unique identity is perceivable through its settlement patterns. Initially, the community formed river linear settlements concentrated along the Damnoen Saduak Canal. With the development of land transportation routes and the construction of roads into the community, the settlement pattern transformed into a linear settlement. Despite urban expansion along transportation routes, the river linear settlement pattern remains. In addition, the Lak Ha Market community is notable for its unique trading forms and activities, which are clearly recognizable and reflect traditional ways of life. This is most evident in the continuation of trading activities. Socially, the community stands out for its unique traditions and culture, which are preserved and connected to the diverse lifestyles of its various ethnic groups. These traditions influence the use of communal space within the community. In conclusion, the distinctive components of the community in physical aspects play a role in conveying historical narratives, driving the traditional economy, and maintaining customs and culture. The residents' attachment to the riverside lifestyle is a key identity resulting from the settlement patterns of the Lak Ha Market community. The study’s findings can serve as a guideline for studying the identity of other similar traditional market communities, encouraging readers to appreciate the value and inspiration for care and conservation, and aiding relevant agencies in planning development and conservation to sustain the community’s potential and identity.
