Rational Voisin Grazing: A Sustainable Alternative for Agribusiness in Food Production

This study presents a novel contribution to the comprehensive analysis of Rational Voisin Grazing (PRV) in Latin America, exploring its environmental, social, and economic impacts across diverse livestock systems. Unlike prior research that has focused on isolated aspects of PRV, this work provides a holistic perspective based on the evaluation of 50 producers from Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Argentina who implement PRV in the management of goats, sheep, cattle, and buffalo. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews, structured surveys, and field measurements, including the analysis of organic matter and erosion. The findings indicate significant improvements in soil quality, with increased organic matter content and reduced erosion, alongside positive effects on biodiversity. From a social standpoint, producers reported enhanced quality of life, reduced workloads, and stronger community networks. Economically, there was an increase in profitability and better access to sustainable markets. Additionally, this study provides evidence of PRV’s potential to enhance the resilience of livestock systems to climate change, an area that has been underexplored. In conclusion, PRV not only supports soil conservation and the sustainability of livestock systems but also represents a crucial strategy for climate adaptation and rural development in Latin America, highlighting its potential as a replicable model for other regions.
