The effects of the use of psychodrama tools and techniques in the actor’s work

Abstract This article in the Zeitschrift für Psychodrama und Soziometrie explores the intersection of acting methodologies and psychodramatic techniques, focusing on their impact on actor spontaneity and creativity. Drawing from extensive professional and academic experiences, the research investigates the characteristics of psychodrama through the lens of theatre. A significant emphasis is placed on psychodrama and its potential to foster spontaneity and creative self-expression in actor’s work. Through practical workshops, case studies, and performance creation, the study identifies critical factors influencing spontaneity and creativity, such as the director’s guidance, interaction with colleagues, and personal mood and emotional state. The research methodology employs art-based and action research, integrating psychodrama training and observational studies. Notably, the rehearsal process of A.P. Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” directed by Tomi Janežič, a well-known theatre director, psychodrama psychotherapist and professor, and the creation of a solo performance by the author themselves, titled “EGO”, are examined to illustrate the practical application of psychodramatic techniques. The findings highlight that while mastering acting techniques or methods, may sometimes compromise the level of actor’s spontaneity. However, the creative application of psychodramatic methods can significantly revitalize actor training and performance. This study advocates for the integration of psychodramatic principles into theatre education and practice, proposing a synergistic approach that embraces both therapeutic and artistic development to achieve more dynamic and authentic performances.
