Virtual Exchange experience in the field of phonology of german as a foreign/second language

This paper explores a Virtual Exchange experience in the field of German Phonology, engaging students from Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) and the University of Education, Weingarten (PHW), Germany. Drawing on prior work in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and recent projects funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), this study focuses on the pedagogical and intercultural outcomes of the exchange. Highlighting models and approaches to Virtual Exchange, including insights from O’Dowd (2018) in his extensive overview on the topic, the paper addresses both the theoretical and practical aspects of implementing such programs. Participants in this exchange engaged in collaborative tasks, utilizing tools like Padlet for coordination and Zoom for synchronous sessions. They tackled phonological phenomena such as assimilation and developed linguistic skills through activities involving tongue twisters. Feedback from participants underscored the value of the experience, despite challenges like time differences and the need for more frequent interactions. The findings suggest that structured virtual exchanges can significantly enhance students' knowledge in specific academic areas while fostering intercultural competence. This paper aims to encourage educators to adopt Virtual Exchange methodologies to enrich higher education learning environments.
