Carbon emission reduction measures and strategies for zero-carbon port: a case study of Chinese sea port

Ports has experienced great challenges of decarbonisation with the public mounting demands for sustainable environment and gradually implement of the national carbon peak carbon neutralization strategy. Zero-carbon port construction is the best way for ports to deal with the matters. To investigate the better carbon emission reduction measures and strategies, a case study of a typical zero-carbon port in China was studied. Firstly, a bottom-up methods is employed based on the energy consumption of each carbon emission sources. Secondly, the emission characteristics of different emission sources with various energy types are investigated. Finally, the carbon emission reduction measures and strategies are proposed based on emission characteristics. Meanwhile, the carbon emission reduction effectiveness of the carbon emission reduction measures and strategies are given. The results indicate that the energy types with more CO2 emission are diesel and power electricity. The bigger CO2 emission contributors with diesel consumption are harbor boat, cargo handling equipment, and heavy-duty vehicles. Meanwhile, the bigger CO2 emission contributors with power electricity consumption are yard power handling equipment, seaside handling crane and building. A three-step decarbonisation development strategy and the detail measures (i.e. electrification for energy consumption, zero carbonization for energy supply and zero carbonization for related logistics chain) for zero-carbon port are proposed and some future suggestion are given for the case study. It could provide a valuable preferences for the carbon emission reduction and zero-carbon port construction.
