An improved simplified calculation formula for conductor jump height following ice shedding

Using a real transmission line project as a prototype, a conductor finite element model was developed in ANSYS software. Harmonic superposition method was used to simulate the fluctuating wind speeds. The nonlinear finite element analysis method was employed to study the effects of equivalent ice thickness, wind speed, and wind attack angle on the jump height of elliptical ice-covered four-bundled conductors subsequent to ice shedding. On this basis, a simplified calculation formula for the conductor jump height following ice shedding that takes wind load effects into account was proposed and compared with the simplified calculation formula currently in the Chinese standards. The findings from this study offer valuable insights for the design of transmission lines to withstand ice and wind conditions.
