Exploring Character Networks in Assamese Cinema: A Graph-Based Analysis
The study of character networks provides a systematic approach towards an understanding of the dynamics and relations that drive plots and hence derives considerable insight into the core elements forming the fabric of narration. The paper focuses on a thorough discussion of the character network in the Assamese film Jetuka Paator Dore (2011). By generating the character interaction network and employing graph theoretical techniques, we analyze the character interaction network to calculate the centrality metrics and determine important characters, influential relationships, and network motifs that constitute the backbone of a plot. By evaluating the network properties, like degree centrality, betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, eigenvector centrality, and the clustering coefficient, we can identify key characters, important groups, and the pathways of the narrative that influence the unfolding of a movie’s storyline. This examination not only deepens our comprehension of the film’s narrative techniques but also establishes a basis for contrasting the network structure with the narrative progression.
