Analysis of Lightning Electromagnetic Field in Mountainous Terrain

Abstract The propagation characteristics of lightning electromagnetic fields(EMFs) in different terrains are of great significance for research on lightning disaster protection and lightning location. In this paper, we establish a simplified model of mountainous terrain and apply the CPML absorption boundary condition to simulate the lightning EMFs at different observation points along this propagation path using the FDTD method. Through calculations, we study the impact of the height and width of the mountain on the lightning EMFs both above and below the ground. We conducted an investigation into the lightning EMFs waveforms observed at two different points. By comparing these EMFs curves, we have identified some patterns regarding the influence of the mountain on the lightning EMFs. The results can provide reference for studying lightning EMFs under complex propagation paths.
