Delivery at an Inadequate Level of Maternal Care Is Associated With Severe Maternal Morbidity
(Abstracted from Am J Obstet Gynecol 2024;231:546.e1–546.e20) The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) developed levels of maternal care as a strategy to decrease adverse maternal health outcomes. The strategy classifies care for birthing hospitals by describing its ability to meet the needs of pregnant patients, in terms of medical and support staff to provide complex care as well as hospital capabilities and physical facilities.
