Characterization of milk and dairy products consumers and consumption habits in Boa Vista, Roraima

This study aimed to characterize the profile of milk and dairy product consumers in Boa Vista, Roraima, focusing on consumption habits and consumer knowledge regarding product types, quality standards, and health inspection processes, within a broader social and cultural context. A total of 211 individuals participated in the survey, with 73.7% reporting regular consumption of cow’s milk and 95.7% consuming dairy products. The most consumed types of milk were powdered, whole, and UHT milk. Factors such as price, quality, and brand primarily influenced milk purchases, while taste was the main criterion for choosing dairy products. The expiration date was the most frequently consulted information on packaging. The study revealed notable gaps in consumer knowledge: 47.6% were unable to differentiate between pasteurized and UHT milk, and 36.5% were unaware of the distinction between milk protein allergy and lactose intolerance. Butter, yogurt, and mozzarella cheese emerged as the most popular dairy products. Although 53.6% of respondents acknowledged the health risks of consuming raw milk, 93.2% recognized the health benefits of milk in general. Furthermore, 86.5% were unaware of legislation prohibiting the sale of raw milk. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 49.5% of participants reported no changes in milk consumption patterns. These findings offer valuable insights for the dairy industry and public health sectors to design targeted strategies and educational campaigns aimed at enhancing consumer awareness and promoting the safe consumption of milk and dairy products.
