Creating a database of biobased hydrogen production: country‐based evaluations and comparative analysis
Abstract Hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a crucial element in a sustainable future, providing a variety of solutions to address the climate crisis. Its importance is emphasized by its adaptability, high energy content, and capacity to decarbonize a number of industries, including steel production, the chemical sector (e.g., ammonia and methanol production), oil refining, power generation, and transportation. This paper presents the results of a survey on biobased hydrogen production, presenting a global overview of current practices. It emphasizes the biochemical and thermochemical conversion methods that can transform biomass into high‐value‐added chemicals, fuels, and biohydrogen. The study is also intended to create a structured database detailing previous research, country‐specific assessments, and key stakeholders in biohydrogen production. The survey’s findings show that the production of biobased hydrogen differs significantly between countries, with some emphasizing fermentation‐based techniques whereas others prioritize thermochemical processes. The study also highlights a lack of large‐scale data and the need for a centralized research database. The results offer valuable insights to guide future research and policy development in the biohydrogen sector.
