Fuzzy Logic Based Automated Safety Stopping System for Escalators
Clothing and shoe entrapment, and component failures are the major issues in public escalators, which can be resolved in time to ensure human safety. For this, a working prototype model of escalator has been designed with enhanced safety and fault detection algorithm. This project utilizes smart sensors and Mamdani based fuzzy logic control mechanism to automatically detect any potential hazards like entrapment of objects, speed variations, vibrations, and component failures to ensure safety stopping of escalator. The signals of various sensors like IR sensor, vibration, accelerometer, and current sensors were extracted, and linguistic variables were defined to develop a comprehensive rule base for the fuzzy inference system. Then, a fuzzy logic control mechanism, using IF-THEN rule bases and Mamdani inference engine, is used for precise decision-making on operation of escalator. It ensures the escalator stops automatically in case of safety risks to passengers and malfunction of components for predictive maintenance work.
