Assessment of the mining impact at the Staroihrenivske river sand deposit development on the coastal zone stability

Abstract The paper examines the development of a sand deposit in the Dnipro River’s channel and the impact of the underwater area near the shore on the stability of the coastal zone. A brief description of the Staroihrenivske river sand deposit is provided. The deposit is located underwater within the river, so a hydromechanized method of mining is used, involving dredging and a grab crane. It has been determined that the granulometric composition of the bottom sediments affects the stability of the shore. The main type of extracted mineral belongs to sedimentary rocks. To assess the stability of the coastal zone, the impact of water waves was analyzed. A review of meteorological statistical data for the area allowed for identifying the prevailing wind directions. Wave formation occurs due to the movement of wind masses across the water surface. For different wind directions that occur during various seasons, water wave parameters were calculated, and the length of the dynamically stable shore was determined. The main characteristics of the waves that influence coastal stability have been established.
