Numerical Study on Effective Coupling Length of Vertical Shielded Cable Illuminated by HEMP

The effective coupling length (ECL) is important for simplifying the analysis of strong electromagnetic pulse (EMP) coupling with long-line and cable networks. Previous research has predominantly focused on the ECL of overhead lines. This paper employs a full-wave transmission line hybrid methodology to investigate the ECL of vertically installed shielded cables. The results reveal distinct influence patterns compared with those observed in overhead lines, demonstrating different coupling mechanisms. The findings can provide theoretical and computational support for EMP coupling analysis of large-scale cable systems.

Abstract

The effective coupling length (ECL) is important for simplifying the analysis of strong electromagnetic pulse (EMP) coupling with long-line and cable networks. Previous research has predominantly focused on the ECL of overhead lines. This paper employs a full-wave transmission line hybrid methodology to investigate the ECL of vertically installed shielded cables. The results reveal distinct influence patterns compared with those observed in overhead lines, demonstrating different coupling mechanisms. The findings can provide theoretical and computational support for EMP coupling analysis of large-scale cable systems.
