Successful Career Construction in the Fourth Industrial Revolution:Young Graduates in the UAE
This study aims to assess the impacts of different components of career competencies and career commitment on the career success of young graduates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as well as to understand how these individuals construct their careers in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. Data were collected from 407 graduates under the age of 30 through an online questionnaire. Two models were developed: one related to the general higher-order constructs of boundaryless competencies, ever-changing competencies, and career commitment, and the other to the components of these three constructs. The hypotheses associated with each model were tested using multiple linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that at the general higher construct level, boundaryless competencies, protean competencies, and career commitment each significantly impact the career success of young graduates. However, at the component level, the only significant predictors are the "know whom" and environmental knowledge competencies, along with career identity. This study is the first to investigate, at the component level, the influences on career success of young graduates in a developing country with a dynamic labour market that responds effectively to the demands of the fourth industrial revolution. The practical implications suggest that both employees and employers would benefit from collaboratively developing individual career competencies, professional networks, environmental knowledge, and career identity.
