“Warning” Through the Lens of Antiaging and Plastic Surgery

The aim of this study is to analyze the poem and painting "Warning" through the lens of antiaging and plastic surgery. Jenny Joseph's poem "Warning" and Ann Sutherland's painting "Warning" were analyzed. As a plastic surgeon, one might view this as a challenge to the profession's emphasis on restoring youthfulness. The poem advocates for individuality over conformity, proposing that true beauty stems from self-expression, irrespective of societal norms. From a surgeon's perspective, this could initiate a discussion on how aging encompasses both physical and psychological aspects. Although procedures might boost an individual's confidence, the primary objective should be in harmony with the patient's personal identity and sense of self. The woman in the painting embodies unapologetic authenticity. From a surgical perspective, it underscores the significance of subtle, patient-centered approaches that boost confidence while preserving individuality. Her face, etched with lines, narrates a tale of laughter and life experiences. Surgeons frequently focus on maintaining natural expressions in facial rejuvenation to ensure that a person's character remains visible, even in the quest for smoother skin. The subject's relaxed posture and assured expression illustrate that true beauty extends beyond mere physical appearance. This aligns with a growing trend in cosmetic procedures aimed at empowering patients rather than conforming to societal expectations. This paper aims to integrate art, literature, and philosophy into the realm of aesthetics and antiaging medicine, thereby reminding practitioners of the artistic essence inherent in their work. I believe that plastic surgery, in particular, represents a unique blend of art and science.
