Wearing Two Kippot/Yarmulkes

The end of May 2024 marked the 50th anniversary of my smicha/ordination at the liberal Reform Hebrew Union College—Jewish Institute of Religion (Cincinnati campus) rabbinical program, succeeded only somewhat later (1991) by the awarding of an earned Doctor of Hebrew Letters Degree (DHL) from its Graduate School (same campus). Three years into my full- time rabbinate in Mobile, Alabama (1977– 1984), while working on my doctorate, I began teaching Judaic Studies courses at Spring Hill College, a Jesuit institution of higher learning. Thus, full- time rabbi; part- time academic.
