Teaching the lexical aspect of foreign-language speech activity based on the WORDWALL platform in a secondary school

The problem for the research. Mastering foreign-language vocabulary plays an important role in introducing schoolchildren to the values of native and foreign cultures. However, there are many shortcomings in the methodology of teaching the lexical aspect of speech activities, which this study aims to overcome. Its problem is: what are the methodological prerequisites for using the WordWall platform as an effective means of teaching students the lexical aspect of foreign-language speech activities? Methods of investigation. The experimental teaching on the approbation of training lexical exercises on the WordWall platform took place in grades 9 “a” and 9 “b” (52 students in total) on the basis of Kirov Lyceum of Economics and Law, Russian Federation. The set of exercises is designed for the stages of semantics of lexical units, the formation and improvement of lexical skills of foreign-language speech activities and the control of students’ results. The calculation of Wilcoxon T-test revealed that after the experimental teaching Temp. turned out to be < Tcr. (18 < 466) at p < 0,05. Consequently, changes in the participants' results are explained not by random factors, but by conducting experimental teaching. KEYWORDS The findings of the study. The results of the experimental teaching indicate the successful testing of the foreign language lexical exercises on the WordWall platform. The results of the approbation (the average level result of the control section is 97 %), as well as the results of the conversation with the participants of the experimental work, allowed us to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the lexical exercises on the WordWall platform. Conclusions. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time a theoretical justification of the effectiveness of using the WordWall platform for the formation and improvement of foreign-language lexical skills in secondary schools is presented, and a set of training lexical exercises on this digital platform has been developed and successfully tested.
