At the Crossroads of Faith and Social Action: Ethnographic Insights from Churches in the DRC and Angola

This article explores the pivotal role of churches in providing social care in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Through ethnographic observations and comparative analysis, it highlights the contributions of historic churches, African independent churches, and revivalist churches to education, healthcare, conflict resolution, and community development. While historic churches remain the primary social actors due to their long-standing missionary legacy, independent churches and some revivalist movements demonstrate resilience and innovative approaches despite financial and structural limitations. The study also examines the challenges churches face, including governance issues, political co-optation, and intra-religious disparities, while emphasizing their indispensable role in holistic development. The findings suggest that sustainable partnerships between churches, governments, and international organizations could enhance their impact on social transformation and inclusive development in Africa. Some religious groups struggle with systemic issues that weaken their role as essential partners in community social transformation. These challenges give rise to hegemonic church governance, deeply rooted in ethnic dynamics and reinforced by a culture of loyalty to corrupt leadership, often driven by personal socio-economic survival or self-enrichment. Establishing partnerships between institutions could create opportunities for accountability, enabling religious organizations to safeguard their credibility as key partners in improving the well-being of populations.
