Monographie analytique de Jatropha chevalieri
Abstract: The quality of traditional medicines causes enormous problems. Therefore, chromatographic fingerprinting constitutes an important tool for evaluating their quality. The aim of this work is to establish an analytical monograph of Jatropha chevalieri, a plant species used in traditional medicine. The methodology consists of a systematic review of the literature on the plant species and chromatographic fingerprinting (conventional thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance chromatography (HPTLC)) of its extracts. The results of the thin layer chromatographic analysis show the presence of sterols and/or terpenes, coumarins, flavonoids and saponosides in the J. chevalieriextracts. The latter is a shrub up to 1 meter high which mainly occurs in arid and semi-arid areas of the African continent. Antimalarial, antimicrobial and anti-radical activities have been reported from the plant. Previous work also made it possible to isolate the Chevalierins A, B and C from this plant. This work made it possible to carry out a bibliographic review of work on the plant and to propose a preliminary chromatographic method for identifying the plant. Exhaustive sampling, taking into account geographic and environmental variabilities, would make it possible to establish markers for plant identification. Keywords: Jatropha chevalieri, CCM, HPTLC, ethnobotany, biological activity, phytochemistry.
