Elucidating and Biomimicking the Coloration Mechanisms Responsible for the Vibrant Blue Hues of the Common Kingfisher (Advanced Optical Materials 13/2025)
Coloration Mechanisms of Kingfisher Feathers This image illustrates the coloration mechanism of the kingfisher's back feathers. Keratin nanochannels within the feathers, responsible for blue structural colors, have quasi-ordered network structures. They produce dark blue, light blue, and cyan as the volume fraction of keratin increases while the pitch is constant. More details can be found in article 2402936 by Jong-Souk Yeo and co-workers.
