Lutas sociais, políticas e ideologias linguísticas – o caso da linguagem neutra
This article explores the theoretical and analytical potential of articulating propositions from the Bakhtin Circle’s conception of language with Bernard Spolsky’s work on language policy. We focus on the ongoing debates surrounding gender-neutral language in Brazil, with particular attention to language ideologies – understood here as ideas, values, and beliefs about language materialized in the production of signs and utterances within ideological spheres and everyday communication. Taking into account utterances in circulation in recent years, our argument suggests that, while these debates foster critical reflection and challenge normative frameworks, they are also deeply shaped by the sociotechnical architecture of hybrid media systems governed by the logic of attention, visibility, and engagement. As such, these discussions tend to reproduce and reinforce discursively (re)formulated ideologies and beliefs through mechanisms aligned with dogmatism and performative signaling.
