Leveraging AI to Analyse Children's Online Exposure to Unhealthy Marketing: Advancing the ‘Capture on-Screen’ Step of the WHO's CLICK Framework

Childhood obesity is a growing public health challenge, exacerbated by children's exposure to targeted digital marketing of unhealthy foods. The World Health Organization (WHO) developed the CLICK Framework to support Member States to monitor this exposure. One key component of the framework, “Capture On-Screen,” proposing real-time screen capture of children's online activities. However, manually analyzing the data collected through this method can be highly resource intensive. In response, WHO team developed an AI-assisted solution to automate the process, recognized in the 2023 WHO LEAD Innovation Challenge. This paper explores the feasibility, scalability, and challenges of implementing this AI-driven solution to enhance WHO's efforts in protecting children from harmful digital marketing.
