Reconfigurable Tan Delta in shape memory hybrids: a new approach for tunable damping

• Programmability of Tan Delta in shape memory hybrids (SMHs) using controlled shape memory cycles is investigated. • Pre-strain affects viscoelasticity of the SMHs, with Tan Delta increasing after programming and reducing upon recovery. • Re-programmability of Tan Delta through cyclic programming offers new approach for designing tunable damping materials. This study investigates the programmability of Tan Delta in shape memory hybrids (SMHs) through controlled shape memory cycles. The SMH samples were subjected to varying pre-strains (20 %, 40 %, and 50 %) to examine their impact on Tan Delta. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) at 1 Hz and 10 Hz was performed on strip specimens cut at different angles from the programmed samples. The results indicate that pre-strain significantly affects viscoelastic properties, with Tan Delta increasing after programming and reducing upon shape recovery. The highest Tan Delta values were observed at a pre-strain of 20 % and an oscillation angle of 60°. This study demonstrates the reprogrammability of Tan Delta in SMHs via pre-strain and oscillation angle control, providing a new approach for designing tunable damping materials.
