Incidence of nasal rhinosporidiosis in the UK
Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease mainly affecting the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. It is an endemic disease in South India. Its incidence in the UK is very low. In this case report, a male patient presented with a 6-month history of foreign body sensation and feeling of a lump in the right nostril with occasional epistaxis. Clinical examination revealed a fleshy polypoidal mass in the right nasal cavity. CT showed a mass arising from the right inferior turbinate without bone erosion. He underwent endoscopic excision of the right nasal mass, and histopathology confirmed it as rhinosporidiosis. Even though this disease is considered rare in the UK, a high index of suspicion is needed for those who present with a unilateral polypoidal bleeding nasal mass. This will enable proper surgical planning and thus help to reduce disease recurrence rates.
