A NOVEL APPROACH OF THE IGNITION AND COMBUSTION SIMULATION OF DEM-BASED THREE-DIMENSIONAL PROPELLANT BEDS IN CASED MUNITIONS BASED ON AN EXTENDED DISCONTINUOUS GALERKIN METHOD

A comprehensive understanding of the internal ballistic processes during ignition and combustion is essential. This research emphasizes the need for detailed simulations of the three-dimensional propellant bed, considering specific grain geometries and the design of igniters that affect fluid flow within the combustion chamber. Current numerical models often cut down these processes, leading to a simplified representation of local ignition phenomena. To address this, an extended ignition and combustion model for statistical three-dimensional propellant beds is proposed, utilizing an extended discontinuous Galerkin method (XDG) to account for complex interactions between solid and gaseous phases. The study aims to improve the accuracy of predictions related to local ignition and combustion phenomena, which is vital for the development of safer and more efficient ammunition systems, while also outlining the mathematical framework and computational methods used for this purpose.
